Hilary was born in Corbridge, Northumberland and attended school in Bridlington Yorkshire. She moved to Dundee where she qualified as a dentist at Dundee Dental Hospital in 1973. She became a General Dental Practitioner in Dundee and as her family grew up she took on her own dental practice in Downfield Dundee.
Art has always been an important part of her life and she has attended many evening classes within the Dundee area including Forgan Art Centre, Graham Street College and Duncan of Jordanstone, although she was first influenced at a very early age by her mother who was an art teacher.
Her subject matter varies from portraits to traditional landscapes. She is particularly drawn to trees and the effect of reflections on water. One of her projects has been to capture the colour and texture of rust.
She is currently experimenting with mixed medium and a series on paintings using a limited palate.
