Cathy Wagstaff is a Contemporary Landscape Artist based in Highland Perthshire.
She creates bold and expressive semi-abstract paintings in mixed media with ink and watercolours. Some of her work combine collage, earth or sand and other elements found on location.
She studied drawing with Open College of the Arts in 2017-19, and the year-long outdoor Landscape Course with Paintbox School of the Arts in 2020-21 in East Lothian.
Cathy starts by sketching outside on location and uses photos loosely to jog her memory when back in the studio. She takes a pared down approach to reflect her vision and the essence of her impression of a place.
This way of working is rooted in her interest in minimalism and traditional Japanese ink paintings.
Cathy works in series, so each piece connects to another and is unique.
For her being in the landscape is synonym of freedom. The beauty of the ever-changing light, the spirit of a place, and awe of the natural world are constant inspiration.
She hopes her artwork will uplift you every time you look at it in your home, and inspire you to love and protect your local landscape.
